The Methuen Adult Learning Center partners with Middlesex Community College and Northern Essex Community College to ensure that HiSET/GED graduates and ESOL students at the advanced levels have access to higher education through Transitions and Bridge to CollegeĪs well as Integrated Education and Training programming, providing students access to a career pathway. Students become active members of the One-Stop Career Center to develop their job search, resume-building and interviewing skills. MassHire Merrimack Valley partners with the Adult Learning Center to ensure that students are employment ready. Students co-enrolled at the Center and the tutoring program benefit from the opportunity to accelerate their learning. The tutoring program allows students the option to begin their studies without delay and to enter our program at a future date. The Methuen Adult Learning Center collaborates with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Nevins Memorial Library to provide tutoring for students waiting to enter the program or who may have scheduling conflicts due to work, childcare or transportation issues.

Registration takes place at the Center Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm for morning classes, and Monday-Wednesday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for evening classes, by appointment only at this time. Although registration is ongoing throughout the school year, it is advisable to complete a registration form as soon as possible to secure a seat in class. HiSET/GED preparation classes are offered on a morning schedule. The Center offers classes on a morning and evening schedule with multiple levels of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

The classes are FREE of charge and are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen. Students enrolled in the program in 2020-2021 came from 27 different countries, and 17 languages were represented. The Methuen Adult Learning Center is beginning its 32nd year and typically serves over 200 students annually. To begin the 2021-2022 school year, all classes will be conducted remotely until further notice.

What is Remote Learning?ĭistance Learning is designed for adult education students who enjoy working independently and are motivated to learn language and ABE is an umbrella term used to describe a range of educational services for adults including basic literacy (including English language skills for non-native speakers of English), mathematics and numeracy, digital literacy, civics, and Adult Secondary Education (preparation for the HiSET and GED tests to obtain the high school equivalency diploma).
